College Transition Program
In partnership with University of Central Florida's College of Health and Public Affairs, UCP is launching the College Transition Program. The program will provide young adults, ages 18-21 with disabilities, an integrated, age appropriate post-secondary education experience. Participants will participate in UCF classes, recreation/campus activities and an internship or work experience where they will be encouraged and expected to gain independent living skills and the tools necessary to enter the workforce. The program is free for participants who are eligible for the McKay scholarship.
Eligibility requirements:
- Must be 18 - 21 years old before August 1, 2009
- Must reside in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Brevard or Lake County
- Have a developmental disability, Individual Education Plan (IEP) and be able to effectively communicate (either verbally, through sign language or using a communication device)
- Free for those eligible for the McKay Scholarship (Private pay available if ineligible for McKay Scholarship)
- Provide your own transportation, cell phone and health insurance
- Completed requirements for a high school special diploma but have not exited high school
- Have at least one paid or unpaid work experience and be able to move independently around campus
Program Highlights
- A comfortable setting with 10 to 20 participants
- Supports individual interests, strengths and challenges
- Develops strong academic and life skills, appropriate social interactions and language skills
- Enrollment in one to two college courses each semester with course work adapted to skill levels
- Participation in volunteer internships or paid work experience with the support of a job coach
- Opportunity for recreation and socialization with peers
- Offered at the new UCP East Orange/Bailes Campus adjacent to UCF in Central Florida Research Park
